持 F-1 Visa 的學生可以馬上在校園裡工作，但在校外工作 ( 除非是與學校有聯盟關係的教育機構 ) 的話則必須要等一學年後. 且因持學生簽証主要是來美國念書而不是工作，所以即使要在校外工作通常還要符合一些要件:
1) 無預期的、不可抗拒的嚴重經濟因難. 除了一些特別例外，前題是你還是必需保持你的學生身份，繼續念書以維持規定的時數，並且在學校開學期間每星期工作不超過20 小時.
2) 在經政府認可的國際機構裡當 Intern / 實習生.
至於 OPT (Optional Practical Training) :
1) Non- STEM: 只限 12 個月，且必須在畢業後 14 個月內完成
2) STEM: 指的是 science, technology, engineering or mathematics 的學生，可以享有 29 個月
但若你再拿一個更高的學位，可以再有另一個 12 個月的 OPT.
一般OPT 不能有超過 90 天的失業期間，至於 STEM 的學生則不能有超過 120 天的失業期. 且除了一些例外，未充分使用的 OPT 時間並不能保留到以後使用.
如果在 OPT 期間申請 H1B, 但因受限於年度配額，以致未能適時銜接的上，則可享有自動延長至 10 月1 日, F2 也可因此受益.

回覆刪除I have a question about "OPT extension" question: if I need to travel but I didn't get my new EAD card yet, will that be okay? I have my signed I-20, old EAD card and letter from the place I work. Also, my VISA is valid for multiple entries untill 2015.

我在網路上查了好久,可是都只找到是綠卡結婚的,可是我們兩個都只是一般F-1VISA的學生, 我們都在紐約,所以想在紐約辦公證,會很麻煩嗎?大家都建議去Vegas會比較簡單,但好像聽說因為太多人在亂結婚,所以也可以不具法律效益是嗎??

You will need the required identification such as driver's license, or passport and some places may require birth certificate. Usually the marriage license fee is reasonable. 2. Get married while the marriage license is still valid. The marriage license is usually valid between 30-90 days. Most counties offer courthouse marriages for a small fee. Please visit the County website for information. 3. Congratulations, you are now married. If of you decides to stop school, you can then change to F-2 dependent status.
